Snow provides convenient excuse for resolution breaking

Recent snow falls across much of the UK have provided an excellent reason for swimmers to swiftly abandon their well-intentioned New Year resolutions.

Difficult driving conditions, school closures, a shortage of grit and panic buying in supermarkets have all meant that the annual cessation of committed training has now been brought forward by a couple of weeks.

With meteorologists, such as former masters swimming champion Chris Fawkes, forecasting no immediate let-up in the frigid conditions, the prospect of training continues to look bleak.

‘I promised myself on New Year’s Eve that I would swim every session this year, but then it started to snow. Although it wasn’t actually settling near me I heard that in places like Scotland it was really deep and stuff. I thought it was best for all concerned if I just stayed in and watched Celebrity Big Brother instead.’ said one unnamed swimmer in a telephone interview, adding ‘The changing rooms are really cold at this time of year.’

‘As a native Brit, I simply don’t know how you can possibly be expected to do anything when it snows.’ said another.
