Greeks: Upset
The Greek government has decided to sell the entire site of the 2004 Athens Olympics on internet auction website eBay in order to raise much needed funds.
Despite domestic opposition, recent financial turmoil coupled with social upheaval in Greece has forced leading figures in the government to consider all possible options as part of an austerity plan designed to keep the country’s economy afloat.
The swimming pool where Michael Phelps won his first six Olympic golds and raced Ian Thorpe in the process is just one of the many highlights to be included in the offering, which it is hoped will help the country avoid defaulting on its loans.
The auction page describes the entire Athenian construction as: ‘Very nice. Only used once. One careful owner. A little dusty.’ It also states that the successful bidder is expected to pay for postage and packing.
A spokesperson for games organisers, EasyOlympics.com, told The Wobbly Block that despite having no reserve price, the auction has yet to attract any significant bids, but it was still ‘early days’. However, they did say that the British Museum is reported to be ‘very interested’ in the Parthenon.
