Genius plan to sell chips at pool inexplicably fails

Hull: Larkin around

A swimming pool in Hull has been forced to remove a vending machine selling chips after complaints from members of the public.

For unknown reasons visitors to the Albert Avenue Pools are said to have taken against the idea of providing delicious, piping-hot, fried food through a convenient and always-available service.

Such was the strength of feeling that the machine was operational for less than a week in total. A move defended by Alison Walker, Hull City Council’s assistant head of arts, leisure and face stuffing, who said it had been used as part of a trial.

It has been reported that in future weeks the council will be conducting similar trials of  doughnut stands, candy floss stalls and cigarette machines.

A recent ‘survey’ for parenting group (and bastions of statistical integrity) Netmums found that 40% of British leisure centre vending machines only offered snacks described as ‘unhealthy’. Hull City Council is said to be ‘totally committed’ to doubling this figure by 2012.

‘Selling chips in a vending machine is a disgrace. Without burgers to accompany them it’s a complete waste of time.’ said one senior council official in exchange for anonymity and a Big Mac™ Extra Value Meal™.
