Phelps: The Musical to hit London’s West End

Biggins: Bowman

It has been announced that a musical production of the life of swimmer Michael Phelps is to be staged in London’s West End.

Following hot on the stiletto heels of an opera about the life of Anna Nicole Smith, Golden Boy: The Michael Phelps Story will chart the American’s life set to the music of a plethora of well known hits including Sinead O’Connor’s Nothing Compares to You, Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now, Take it to the Limit by The Eagles and Crash by The Primitives.

Reports have suggested that the actor to play Phelps has yet to be decided upon, but fellow American Matt Damon has been heavily tipped for the part after his performance as François Pienaar in the film Invictus. It is felt his experience of playing sporting greats a foot taller than himself will be vital.

Even in the absence of a leading man some of the other prominent roles have already been cast, with stage stalwart Christopher Biggins taking the role of Phelp’s coach and mentor Bob Bowman. He will be joined by British screen star Michael Sheen, famous for films such as The Queen and The Damned United, who will be playing the roles of Garrett Weber-Gale, Jason Lezak, Cullen Jones and Tony Blair.

The production has been written by Ben Elton, but it is as yet unclear who will be hired to play the strippers.
