Recent snow falls across much of the UK have provided an excellent reason for swimmers to swiftly abandon their well-intentioned New Year resolutions.

Difficult driving conditions, school closures, a shortage of grit and panic buying in supermarkets have all meant that the annual cessation of committed training has now been brought forward by a couple of weeks.

‘I promised myself on New Year’s Eve that I would swim every session this year, but then it started to snow.
